Diaspora Impact, Inc.’s Community Broadband & Virtual E- Library Project

Diaspora Impact, Inc.’s Community Broadband & Virtual E- Library Project is a tech-in-education initiative to deliver affordable highspeed internet and digital library access to schools and communities across Nigeria, with a view to scaling across Africa.

The project aims to provide broadband internet infrastructure and a shared virtual library system that gives students, teachers, and community members access to quality learning resources anytime, anywhere.

Community broadband networks will be built in partnership with schools and local stakeholders, offering some of the fastest available connections to support education, economic opportunity, and quality of life.

What We Are Building

Community broadband access: Local networks that connect schools and community libraries to highspeed internet, using partners such as Tydacomm, ICSL, and SpaceX Starlink.

A virtual library: A centralized digital collection of books and learning materials accessible via computers, tablets, and phones, including publicdomain and subscription content.

Why It Matters

The virtual library removes geographical barriers by making curated learning materials available regardless of location, while saving space, time, and operating costs compared to traditional libraries. Users can quickly search and retrieve a wide variety of digital resources, multiple patrons can use the same item at once, and issues of missing or damaged books are eliminated. The project also helps close the digital divide by providing both access and user support, so all patrons can learn how to effectively use online resources.

How It Works

Diaspora Impact partners with selected schools and organizations to set up equipped virtual library spaces and wireless broadband coverage on their campuses and in surrounding communities. Patrons can log in remotely with a device and internet connection or visit the onsite virtual library, where they register for a library card and receive login credentials to access digital collections.

Participating schools and community sites provide library space, basic facilities, and local staff, including onsite tech administration and user support personnel to manage daytoday operations. Diaspora Impact focuses on identifying donors, raising taxdeductible funds, sourcing equipment (including solar power solutions), and coordinating local technical installers.

Impact, Scale, and Budget

In the first two years, the project plans to connect at least 20 schools and community libraries in Nigeria, establishing a national virtual library platform that any registered patron can access anytime and anywhere. Initial pilot partners include leading secondary schools, universities, and community institutions across Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ekiti, Imo, Abia, and Ogun States.

A proposed starter budget of about 100,000 USD covers onetime installation, 5KW solar power systems, and firstyear broadband subscriptions for 10 initial locations, with expansion driven by donor support and alumni partnerships. The project is led by a management team including Founder/CEO George Oluwaboro, CPA, COO Ms. Aishat Yusuf, and CTO Ms. Anu Faboro.
